Welcoming a newborn into the world is an unforgettable experience, and capturing those first precious moments is something many parents cherish forever. However, many parents hesitate to book a professional newborn session due to some common misconceptions. As a Surrey newborn photographer with over a decade of experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of newborns—including many sets of twins, siblings, and pets (my personal treat) and I can confidently say that these newborn photography myths shouldn’t hold you back from creating beautiful memories.
Myth 1: “I'm too tired and my home isn’t tidy enough for a photoshoot.”
Reality: Of course - you just had a baby - You don’t need a picture-perfect home for gorgeous newborn photos.
You've just had a baby - and you or someone dear has suggested that you have some newborn photographs taken of your gorgeous new baby. How can you have a newborn photographer come to your home - you are far too exhausted and your home is a mess! Hoovering and tidying should be the last thing on your mind. However, many parents worry that their home isn't "photo-ready," rest assured, there's no need to stress! I specialise in in-home newborn photography, and I bring everything needed to create a stunning studio setup so there is really no need for a tidy home - it won't be in the photographs! I bring professional lighting, wraps, the backdrops, indeed everything needed to create those utterly gorgeous images of your new baby.
The beauty of in-home newborn sessions is that I only need a small space to set up. I’ll arrive with all the necessary equipment and will set up in an area where you can be nearby. I encourage you to take shots and videos on your phone - it's part of the experience! Close-up shots focus on your baby, keeping your home décor - or indeed baby laundry out of shot. You won't regret it!
Please stay in your PJs - you just had a baby!
Myth 2: “My baby won’t settle for photos.”
Reality: They do all settle - it's just about patience and not stressing out
Over the years, many parents have called me a "Baby Whisperer" for my calm, gentle approach - my husband is still looking for this woman! With over a decade of experience in newborn photography, I understand how creating a warm, peaceful environment helps babies relax and settle into those beautiful, curled-up poses.
Allowing plenty of time for feeding, changing, and cuddles, so you never feel rushed is always my goal. Making you and your newborn baby feel comfortable and completely at ease. I use my expert newborn posing techniques learned over the years to capture the most, beautiful portraits of your baby.
It's all about being comfortable cosy and well fed!
The best time for a newborn shoot is between 4 and 28 days old, but I also photograph babies up to four weeks.
Myth 3: “Professional newborn photos are too posed and unnatural.”
Reality: My style is simple and baby-focused.
If you’re imagining stiff, overly posed photos, think again. My photographic style is all about capturing your baby’s natural beauty - their tiny features. I use soft, neutral tones to keep the focus on your baby, and natural toned wooden and bamboo props so all the focus is on your baby. It's not too propy either - simplicity is key. Their newborn curl!! Love it.
Myth 4: “I didn't do it for my first and my older one won't come near.”
Reality: I can create magic moments between your new baby and their older sibling
Many parents say they wish they had captured these moments with their first babies, as time moved so quickly and a first newborn is often a shock to the system! Having not booked a session with the first they may feel that they can't for the second. That's the beauty of sibling shots - show that relationship in it's early stages! Even if they're not keen to start with I will win them over and Daddy will be your newborn's bodyguard in case they get lose interest. Sibling interactions are a key part of my sessions - I work quickly and am very adept at silly Peppa Pig/ Farting noises to distract your older child - dignity is not an issue when getting 'the shot!'
